Understanding the Data

Obtaining accurate statistical information about pets in the United States isn't like shooting fish in a barrel. About of the information is based on estimates derived from two periodic surveys, and the various survey takers exercise not agree. Data reflecting shelter/rescue fauna populations is spotty due to a lack of reporting requirements, which leaders in animal welfare are aiming to address with the Shelter Animals Count projection.

There are two primary sources of pet demographics in the Usa: the biennial APPA National Pet Owners Survey by the American Pet Products Association, and the U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook by the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA) which is published every 5 years. These surveys provide data well-nigh trends in pet ownership and produce estimates of the full number of dogs and cats.

The post-obit is select data from the APPA and the AVMA. For boosted information—including questions about how to interpret this data—please reach out direct to the APPA and/or AVMA.

Pet Buying Estimates from Underserved Communities

While the figures referenced previously tend to reflect mainstream America, the Pets for Life team of the Humane Society of the Usa has spent years working in, and collecting data from, our nation'due south most underserved communities which lack admission to affordable and bachelor pet resource. Nosotros have plant startling differences in pet ownership. People living in underserved communities love their pets as much as pet owners anywhere else in the nation. However, there is extreme inequity in admission to veterinarian care, spay/neuter providers and other services most Americans take for granted, and this departure is reflected in the information:

  • Pets living in underserved communities in the U.South.: 22 million
  • Percentage of pets living in underserved communities who are non spayed or neutered: 88%
  • Percentage of pets living in underserved communities who accept never seen a veterinarian: 69%

These cats are unowned, but may exist provided with food, h2o and/or shelter past caring individuals. The HSUS advocates for a trap-neuter-return arroyo to humanely managing customs cats.

Shelter & Rescue Grouping Estimates

Accurate data from shelters and rescue groups is difficult to obtain considering in that location is no central information reporting system for these institutions, and many under-resourced shelters may non accept the technology or power to share their data nationally. The Humane Society of the United States is working with a wide variety of stakeholders to change this through Shelter Animals Count, an initiative formed in 2011 to create and share a national database of sheltered animal statistics, providing facts and enabling insights that volition save lives and go on more pets with their families. In the meantime, here are the best estimates we've found:
